R.H.L = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{-}}\)f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\)(2x + 3)
= 2(0) + 3
= 3

L.H.L = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{+}}\)f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\)3(x + 1)
= 3(0 + 1)
= 3

∴ \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{+}}\) f(x) = 3

R.H.L = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\) 3(x + 1)

= 6

L.H.L = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\) 3(x + 1)
= 3(1 + 1)
= 6

∴ \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\) f(x) = 6

Solution:
The gievn function is f(x) = \(\left\{\begin{array}{cc}
\frac{x}{|x|}, & x \neq 0 \\
0, & x=0
\end{array}\right.\)

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{-}}\left[\frac{x}{|x|}\right]=\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\left[\frac{x}{-x}\right]=\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\)(-1) = -1 [When x < 0 |x| = -x]

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\left[\frac{x}{|x|}\right]=\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\left[\frac{x}{x}\right]=\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\) (1) = 1

It is observed that \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{-}}\) f(x) ≠ \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{+}}\) f(x). Hence \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\) f(x) does not exist.

= 0

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 5^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 5^{+}}\)[|x| – 5] = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 5}\)[x – 5]
= 0

Question 1.
Suppose f(x) = \(\left\{\begin{array}{cc}
a+b x, & x<1 \\ 4, & x=0 \\ b-a x, & x>1
\end{array}\right.\) and if \(\frac{1}{2}\)f(x) = f(1)
What are possible values of a and b?
Solution:
The given function is suppose f(x) = \(\left\{\begin{array}{cc}
a+b x, & x<1 \\ 4, & x=0 \\ b-a x, & x>1
\end{array}\right.\)

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\) (a + bx) = a + b

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\) (b – ax) = b – a f(1) = 4

It is given that \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\)f(x) = f(1)
∴ \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\) f(x)
⇒ a + b = 4 and b – a = 4

Question 4.
If f(x) = \(\left\{\begin{array}{cc}
\mathrm{mx}^2+\mathrm{n}, & \mathrm{x}<0 \\ \mathrm{nx}^3+\mathrm{m}, & 0 \leq \mathrm{x} \leq 1 \\ \mathrm{nx}^3+\mathrm{m}, & \mathrm{x}>1
\end{array}\right.\) For what integers m and n does both \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\) f(x) and \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\)f(x) exist?
Solution:
The given function is f(x) = \(\left\{\begin{array}{cc}
\mathrm{mx}^2+\mathrm{n}, & \mathrm{x}<0 \\ \mathrm{nx}^3+\mathrm{m}, & 0 \leq \mathrm{x} \leq 1 \\ \mathrm{nx}^3+\mathrm{m}, & \mathrm{x}>1
\end{array}\right.\)

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\)(mx2 + n) = m(0)2 + n = n

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\)(nx + n) = n(0) + m = m

Thus, \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 0}\) f(x) exists if m = n
\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\)(nx + m)
= n(1) + m
= m + n

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\)(nx3 + m)
= n(1)3 + m
= m + n

\(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{-}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1^{+}}\) f(x) = \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\)f(x)
= m + n

Thus, \(\lim _{x \rightarrow 1}\) f(x) exist for any integral value of m and n.
