Question 13.
Foci (±4, 0), the latus rectum is of length 12.
Solution:
Foci (± 4, 0), the latus rectum is of length 12. Here, the foci are on the X-axis.
∴ The equation of the hyperbola is of the form 1
Since the foci are (± 4, 0) ⇒ c = 4
Length of the latus rectum 12 ⇒ \(\frac{2 b^2}{a}\) = 12 ⇒ b2 = 6a
We know that a2 + b2 = c2
⇒ a2 + 6a – 16= 0
⇒ a2 + 8a – 2a – 16= 0
⇒ (a + 8)(a – 2)0
a = – 8, 2
Since a is non-negative; a = 2
⇒ b2 = 6a = 6 × 2 = 12
The equation of the hyperbola is \(\frac{x^2}{4}-\frac{y^2}{12}\) = 1
Question 14.
Vertices (±7, 0), e = \(\frac{4}{3}\)
Solution:
Given that vertices (± 7, 0), e = \(\frac{4}{3}\)
Here the vertices are on the X-axis.
∴ The equation of the hyperbola is of the form \(\frac{x^2}{a^2}-\frac{y^2}{b^2}\) = 1
Since the vertices are (± 7, 0) = a = 7
It is given that e = \(\frac{4}{3} \Rightarrow \frac{c}{a}=\frac{4}{3} \Rightarrow \frac{c}{7}=\frac{4}{3}\)
c = \(\frac{28}{3}\) [∵ e = \(\frac{c}{a}\)]
We know that a2 + b2 = c2
72 + b2 = \(\left(\frac{28}{3}\right)^2\)
⇒ b2 = \(\frac{784}{9}\) – 49
⇒ b2 = \(\frac{784-441}{9}\)
⇒ b2 = \(\frac{343}{9}\)
∴ Thus the equation of the hyperbola is \(\frac{x^2}{49}-\frac{y^2}{\left(\frac{343}{9}\right)}\) = 1
⇒ \(\frac{x^2}{49}-\frac{9 y^2}{343}\) = 1
Question 15.
Foci (0, ±\(\sqrt{10}\)), passing through (2, 3).
Solution:
Foci (0, ±\(\sqrt{10}\)), passing through (2, 3). Here foci are on the Y-axis.
∴ The equation of the hyperbola is of the form – – 1
Here, the foci are (0, ± \(\sqrt{10}\)) ⇒ c = \(\sqrt{10}\)
We know that a2 + b2 = c2
⇒ a2 + b2 = 10
⇒ b2 = 10 – a2 …………….. (1)
Since the hyperbola passing through point (2, 3)
∴ \(\frac{9}{a^2}-\frac{4}{\left(10-a^2\right)}\) = 1 ………. (2)
From (1) and (2) we have
⇒ \(\frac{9}{a^2}-\frac{4}{\left(10-a^2\right)}\) = 1
9(10 – a2) – 4a2 = a2(10 – a2)
90 – 9a2 – 4a = 10a2 – a4
⇒ a4 – 23a2 + 90 = 0
⇒ a4 – 18a2 – 5a2 + 90 = 0
⇒ a2(a2 – 18) – 5(a2 – 18) = 0
⇒ (a2 -18)(a2 – 5) = 0
⇒ a2 = 18 or 5
In hyperbola c > a, i.e., c2 > a2
⇒ ∴ a2 = 5
⇒ b2 = 10 – a2
⇒ b2 = 10 – 5
⇒ b2 = 5
∴ Thus the equation of hyperbola is \(\frac{y^2}{5}-\frac{x^2}{5}\) = 1

Question 16.
Find the equation of the hyperbola of given length of transverse axis 6 whose vertex bisect., the distance between the centre and the focus.
Solution:
Given 2a – 6 ⇒ a = 3 ⇒ a2 = 9.
Since the vertex bisects the distance between the
centre and focus. So c = 2a
⇒ c = 2(3) = 6
⇒ c = 6
∴ c2 = a2 + b2
⇒ b2 = c2 – a2
⇒ b2 = 62 – 32
⇒ b2 = 27
⇒ b = \(\sqrt{27}\)
⇒ b = 3√3
The equation of the hyperbola is \(\frac{x^2}{9}-\frac{y^2}{27}\) = 1.
